I Can Change: LCD Soundsystem Live at MHOW 4/8

your city's a sucker
This was buried in the middle of the awesome set at the Music Hall last Thursday. The one that James Murphy interrupted multiple times to remind us that this was their first show in three years. The same set that turned the crowd into a hysterical mob when the first bass note of "Yr City's A Sucker" shook the floors. This was a show from a band that might not have been on your bucket list, but really should have been. And this is the single that makes "Drunk Girls" look like a trick to see how gullible Pitchfork was.

LCD Soundsystem - I Can Change
new york i love you, but
To those who weren't sure, this surprise show was more a rehearsal for bigger (Terminal 5) and crazier (Coachella) shows to come. That disclaimer didn't give the cue-giving and always cool Murphy, though visibly and verbally intoxicated, or anyone else the idea that this wasn't a pants-dropping dance of a show. For 90 minutes, the music snobs, elitist bloggers and ubiquitous hipsters were all just people dancing.

Seeing LCD Soundsystem brought their looped and lengthy records to life. Strangers danced together, people moshed, friends made out. The sincerity of the band was constantly apparent; from Murphy's admission of his drink (whiskey champagne), to keyboardist Nancy Whang's position on dancing: "Look to your right, now look to your left, if neither of these people is a girl, you're dancing wrong." This was a show so confident it only took two songs to be in my top five.

Go over to Self-Titled Mag for a great write-up, and check out the LCD Soundsystem website where you can stream the new album, out 5/18.
