Beach Girls

Sleigh Bells - Beach Girls

We first heard Sleigh Bells in the Pitchfork Forkcast, and I remember listening to "Crown on the Ground" thinking that even at the lowest volume, this was the loudest sounding record I'd ever heard. I suppose that's what you get when you turn off your limiters and commit to tape the sound of your speakers tweaking.

I didn't like it at first because it just hurt to listen to it, and when I heard someone describe them as "a band that you know is minutes from blowing up" I had to stop for a minute to think; what does that even mean today? Does it mean that they get to quit their day jobs and get on this pay scale?

A part of me thinks that this super-loudness is just a quick pass at novelty. They're obviously not the first band to play live at painful levels, but they might be the first to be loud in your headphones. These Coachella-goers seemed to think they sucked.

Back in Minnie for the week, and I'm going to finally catch this band live when they open for Yeasayer tonight at the most impressionable venue of my childhood. If you guess it you win a prize.
